Magnesium oxide (MgO) is a white, odorless, and hygroscopic solid mineral that occurs naturally as periclase. It is produced industrially by the calcination of magnesium carbonate or magnesium hydroxide at high temperatures. This compound is well known for its high melting point (around 2,800°C) and strong refractory properties, making it ideal for use in ceramics, refractory bricks, and furnace linings. In addition to industrial applications, magnesium oxide is also commonly used in agriculture to correct soil acidity and provide essential magnesium for plant nutrition. In the medical and pharmaceutical sectors, magnesium oxide serves as an antacid and laxative, helping to relieve indigestion, heartburn, and constipation. It is also used as a dietary supplement to prevent or treat magnesium deficiency, which is vital for maintaining muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, and blood pressure. Moreover, due to its insulating properties, MgO is used in electrical and thermal insulation materials. Its multifunctional nature and stability under extreme conditions make it a valuable material across various industries.
